Special Events

In addition to counseling and GED instruction, HEP provides its students with experiences to promote self-esteem and leadership through activities such as:

    • Monthly luncheons with motivational speakers or representatives from various social service agencies
    • Two-hour sessions each semester on topics such as career selection and job skills
    • Graduation Ceremony at the end of each fiscal year
An elective Nutrition class is offered to the High School Equivalency students. This four-session course, conducted by Saira Gonzalez and Ariana Wilson, instructors from the Infant and Family Nutrition Agency, teaches students the benefits of healthy eating by following the “food pyramid,” and making fresh fruits and vegetables available to their families. As well, the instructors pass along tips about proper refrigeration, freezing foods in useable quantities to maintain freshness and be more economical with their grocery budget.

Ms. Gonzalez shows off the magnetic Food Pyramid card that she encourages her students to place on their refrigerators.

Students listen to Ms. Gonzalez while they enjoy a healthy snack.

Ms. Wilson serves snacks during class.
